Girl Scout Projects

Empowering young leaders through sustainable community service and trail conservation projects

Featured Project: Girl Scout Silver Award

Trail Sign Installation Project

Audrey M, a member of Girl Scout of Nassau County Troop 3230, completed her Silver Award project by installing trail signs along a three-mile section of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Hiking Trail.

Project Overview

Audrey noticed the frustration of hikers when trails lack proper marking, especially in areas where hiking paths merge with biking paths, creating potentially dangerous conditions.

Implementation

Thirteen sign locations were planned and installed along the three-mile section, with custom metal signs, posts, and safety equipment.

Community Impact

The project involved fifteen volunteers from LIGTC, Girl Scouts, and the community, with ongoing maintenance provided by LIGTC.

Skills Developed

  • Leadership: Organized and executed a major community project
  • Project Management: Coordinated volunteers, permits, and logistics
  • Technical Skills: Learned to use augers, power drills, and construction tools
  • Budgeting: Managed project costs and secured donations
  • Community Service: Created lasting impact for hikers and trail users

Project Resources

A four-minute video documenting the project is available on YouTube and theLIGTC website.
